Q: Tell us about yourself and what you do.
Tristan: I am a fully qualified Scottish Mountain Guide and Traditional Stone Carver. I am known currently for being a Mountaineer/Mountain Guide, retired professional Ice Hockey Player and professional Photographer.
Q: What have you been doing with Barbour & Outdoor and Country?
Tristan: I’ve been out exploring the Cheviot-Hills in Northumberland with my dog and testing out the new Barbour 55 Degrees North Collection.
Q: Describe the area you’ve been exploring?
Tristan: This was the first-time l have been to this part of Northumberland. It’s been fun exploring even during a windy day with clouds hovering and the odd spell of rain. This area has stunning natural rock formations that were formed during the early Devonian period. They certainly came in handy for shelter during this wet and windy day.
Q: What did you like about the new Barbour 55 Degrees North Collection?
Tristan: I would say this is my favourite Barbour collection to date. l love the earthy tones they have used, the minimalistic design of this new range and how well everything pieces together. You can wear 3 to 4 layers without feeling any restrictions.
Q: How did it perform in the outdoors?
Tristan: Ideally l got the perfect day to test out the clothing with spells of rain, wind, and sunshine. The clothes l was wearing surprised me how great they performed considering how light they were and how well they protected me against the wind and rain to keep me warm and dry. I also really liked how well and easy the clothes packed into my backpack when the sun was out.
Q: What was your favourite item from the collection?
Tristan: I had a few favourite pieces from the collection, but the one I liked the most was the Barbour Lowland Half Zip Fleece. It was super warm, soft to touch and great to wear, especially with the deep pockets either side. Another favourite from the collection was the Barbour Pass Quilt. Not too bulky, keeps you warm and feels great on the skin.
Q: What are your top tips for exploring the outdoors?
Tristan: The best thing to do when exploring new is to get a good idea of the layout and check multiple weather forecasts to ensure you are dressed appropriately. Make sure you have wind and waterproof clothing and the correct walking shoes or boots. I’d also recommended buying a map, a compass, and ensure you have plenty of snacks to keep your energy levels up. Hydration is also crucial. I normally take about 1-2 litres of water with me.
Q: And what is your best tip of all?
Tristan: My best tip is to educate myself on the area as much as you can, especially small things like Lichen, plants, or types of animals. This broadens your horizons a little more and allows you to make the most of your time outdoors and really connect with the land around you.
