The R.M. Williams Story: From Outback to Best-Selling Icons
Few Australian brands have a story quite like R.M. Williams. Founded in 1932, the brand began with a simple idea: create well-made leather goods that could stand up to life in the Australian outback. More than 90 years later, that same focus on craftsmanship, quality and longevity remains at the heart of R.M. Williams.
From its iconic leather boots to clothing and accessories, the brand has grown far beyond its original purpose. Yet its heritage can still be seen in every collection.
The Man Behind the Brand: R.M. Williams
The story begins with Reginald Murray ‘R.M.’ Williams. After leaving home at just 13, he travelled through the Australian outback. As a result, he gained a deep respect for its landscape and the people who lived and worked there.
These experiences shaped his approach to design. Life in the bush demands practical, dependable clothing and footwear, and R.M. began developing his leather working skills to meet those needs. However, rather than adding unnecessary detail, his designs focused on simplicity, fit and durability. These principles would go on to define the R.M. Williams name.
Early years of the business were closely linked to Australian rural life. R.M. understood the heavy and substantial use stockmen and other workers put their footwear through, and so created his products in line with these demands.
Original catalogues show just how important fit was to the brand from the beginning. R.M.’s expertise in creating comfortable boots for different foot shapes, was highlighted, setting the tone for a business built around quality and careful craftsmanship.

The Birth of an Iconic Boot
The R.M. Williams boot became the clearest expression of RM’s approach to design. Made from a single piece of leather, the distinctive construction helped create a strong, streamlined boot with fewer points which could be weakened by stirrups or excessive walking. The brand still uses this traditional method today. Its iconic boots are handcrafted in Australia using one piece of leather and more than 80 handheld processes, with skilled craftspeople carrying out each stage of the construction.
The result is a boot that feels equally at home in the countryside, at the weekend or dressed up for smarter occasions. The Craftsman boot is perhaps the best-known example, combining its distinctive chisel toe with the traditional construction.
Craftsmanship That Stands the Test of Time
For R.M. Williams, heritage is not simply about looking back. It is about continuing to use the skills and techniques that made the brand’s products so distinctive in the first place.
The Adelaide workshop remains central to this story. Premium leather is selected and carefully prepared before being shaped, stitched and finished by hand. Traditional techniques, including Goodyear welt construction on selected styles, are designed to provide strength and allow the boots to be resoled.
This attention to detail gives R.M. Williams boots their enduring appeal. They are designed to be worn, lived in and enjoyed for years, with the leather developing its own “worn-in” character over time.
More Than Just Boots
Although boots remain at the heart of R.M. Williams, the brand has developed into a complete wardrobe for modern life. Today, the collection includes shirts, polos, knitwear, trousers, denim and outerwear, alongside leather belts, bags and other accessories.
The same principles run through these collections: considered design, quality materials and a timeless approach that avoids chasing short-lived trends. For men, classic shirts and polos work naturally with signature leather boots, while women’s clothing brings the same understated Australian character to everyday dressing.
From the Australian Outback to the World
What began as practical footwear for the Australian bush has become a globally recognised name. The appeal lies partly in the versatility of the designs. R.M. Williams boots may have been shaped by the demands of outback life, but their clean silhouettes and distinctive craftsmanship have made them equally suited to modern wardrobes.
That journey from workwear to everyday style has not meant leaving the brand’s roots behind. Australian craftsmanship, practical design and a connection to the outdoors remain central to R.M. Williams today. It is this balance of heritage and modern wearability that has helped the brand remain relevant across generations.
