We teamed up with our friends over at Barbour, alongside Contract Shepherdess, Hannah Jackson to bring you an easy-to-follow expert guide on having fun while teaching your four-legged friend some new tricks. What would we do without our dogs? They fill our lives with happiness, chaos and unconditional love that can\u2019t be compared to many others. They are there to celebrate our happiest moments, and there to comfort us in your darkest moments. They teach us lessons on life and love through the years that they grace us with their presence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training is a vital part of any dog\u2019s life; it provides both mental and\u202fphysical\u202fstimulation to help keep your dog happy and relaxed throughout the day. It\u2019s also an amazing tool for really building\u202frapport and improving your relationship.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important that when we are training a dog (of any age or standard) that we always consider: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The training session\u202fmust always be FUN. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
    1. We want to choose a quiet environment with limited distractions. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      1. Keep the sessions focused, but also positive. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        1. Never punish your dog \u2014 ignore wrong behaviour and reward the right\u202fbehaviour. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          1. Keep commands and training consistent.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
            1. Breakdown behaviours into easier behaviours and build into more complicated ones. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
              1. Remember to praise in abundance when it\u2019s right (toys, treats, cuddles, verbal praising). <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

                Let’s take the\u202f\u2018roll over\u2019 for\u202fexample here.\u202f<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Roll over\u202fcan be a difficult behaviour for any dog to grasp. It involves the dog performing less natural behaviours and this may make the dog\u202fbecome more hesitant, and\u202fthat’s why we break it down. First, we start with \u2018sit\u2019… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Sit <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                1. Allow your dog to see and\u202fsmell the treat in your hand. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                  1. Slowly move your hand and treat over his head towards his tail and give the command \u2018sit\u2019. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                    1. This should cause the dog to push their head up and bum down into a sitting\u202fposition.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                      1. When successful, give the treat and lots of praise.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                        Next up is\u2026<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        Lie Down <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                        1. Start your dog in the sit position and show the treat in your hand. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                          1. Slowly move your hand down to the ground\u202fin front of the dog’s feet and give the command \u2018down\u2019.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                            1. When successful, give the treat and lots of praise. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                              And<\/strong>, <\/strong>finally…<\/strong> 
                              Roll Over <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                              1. Start with your dog in the lie down\u202fposition and show the\u202ftreat in your hand.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                                1. Move your hand from the dog’s nose toward their shoulder luring them to roll flat on their side.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                                  1. Reward this and repeat a few times. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                                    1. Then continue to move the treat from the dog\u2019s shoulder to backbone, causing the dog to roll onto their back.\u202f <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                                      1. You can reward and praise here if the dog is reluctant OR you can continue to move the treat so the dog rolls completely onto the other side. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
                                        1. Repeat this whilst giving the command\u202f\u2018roll over\u2019.\u202f 
                                           <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                                          When teaching anything new, but especially more\u202fcomplex and less natural behaviours like this one, it is extremely important to be as patient as possible. I always\u202fsay to myself\u202f\u2019think like a dog\u2019\u202f\u2014 the more you can set your mind into a dog’s way of\u202funderstanding and thinking, the quicker and more successful you\u2019re\u202ftraining will be become, and\u202fconsequently the better your relationship and bond will be between you and your dog.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
