It’s not just dedication to outstanding quality at the heart of the Barbour International Brand, but a passion that dates back to 1928, when keen motorcyclist Duncan Barbour joined the family business. His passion for motorcycling gave him a unique insight into exactly what the riders would require from a motorcycling suit, and used this knowledge to introduce the hugely popular International Suit in 1936. This now iconic design was engineered specifically for wear during the International Six Day Trials (ISDT) to give the rider a greater ease of movement, as well as being wind tight.
From there, the International motorcycle suit caught the eye of Captain George Phillips, who was so impressed by the weather proof design, that he requested a two piece prototype. This one off design- the Ursula jacket and trousers- soon became standard issue for submariners during the second world war.
We’re often asked about the distinctive diagonal left chest pocket; some think it’s just a quirky design feature with no real use, others are convinced it’s a fault! In fact, the pocket has been ergonomically designed on the slat to allow riders easy access to maps and time trial cards. So if you’ve ever been worried you’ve been landed with a flaut, know that really you’re wearing a piece of Barbour-and design-history. As for the logo, with the iconic black and gold design, this was inspired by the traditional colours of the Vincent Owners Club, who adopted the International Jacket as their official uniform. Most notably however, the jackets were picked up by Steve McQueen and the US team before the ISDT in East Germany. The icon has gone on to inspire Barbour International collections over the past few years.
Over the years, Barbour International has established itself as the slick, fashion forward younger brother of the Barbour brand, and this season’s collection is no different. Graphic tees, tailored waxed jackets, and luxury leather all add up to an on-trend collection that defies convention.
